Third event: ‘Poesia dopo l’umano’. Conversation with Jorie Graham, 1996 Pulitzer Prize winner, on the occasion of the Italian publication of her new book, Fast, for Garzanti Editore and translated by Antonella Francini.

Born in New York City and raised in Italy until the age of 18, Jorie Graham is one of the most internationally acclaimed poets of the American post-war generation. Awarded with the Pulitzer Prize in 1996 and the recipient of numerous awards in the Usa and abroad, Graham is the author of 14 books of poetry and teaches at Harvard University as the Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory, the first woman to be given this position which was previously held by Seamus Heaney.  In Fast, winner of the Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry from the Library of Congress in 2018, Graham explores the limits of the human and the uneasy seductions of the post-human giving urgent form to the ever increasing pace of transformation of our planet and ourselves. Cyber life, 3D printed ‘life’, life after death, and biologically, chemically, and electronically modified life: in her work Graham lights up the border of our new condition as individuals and as a species on the brink.

Nata a New York e cresciuta a Roma fino all’età di 18 anni, Jorie Graham è fra i maggiori poeti di lingua inglese. Premio Pulitzer nel 1996, insegna a Harvard come Boylston Professor of Rhetoric and Oratory, la prima donna a occupare questa posizione dopo il poeta premio Nobel Seamus Heaney. Ha pubblicato 14 volumi di poesia a cui sono andati numerosi riconoscimenti, fra cui il Bobbitt National Prize for Poetry dalla Library of Congress nel 2018 per il libro Fast. 

In Fast Jorie Graham esplora i limiti dell’umano e le inquietanti seduzioni del post-umano. Evocando una varietà di voci e prospettive diverse dà forma e urgenza alla sempre più rapida trasformazione di cui è investito il pianeta tra cyber-vita, «vita» stampata in 3D, vita dopo la morte, vita biologicamente, chimicamente ed elettronicamente modificata, individualità e appartenenza a una specie che oggi sembra correre veloce verso la sua implosione.
